What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, commonly called EMDR, is a structured, research-supported psychotherapy approach. It is frequently used to help people process trauma and other distressing experiences.

EMDR incorporates bilateral stimulation, which may involve guided eye movements or other alternating sensory input. This process takes place within a broader therapeutic relationship and individualized treatment plan.

What Can EMDR Address?

EMDR may be considered for concerns involving:

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress
  • Distressing memories
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Grief and loss
  • Phobias and persistent fears
  • Negative beliefs about oneself
  • Emotional reactions to particular triggers
  • Difficult childhood or relationship experiences

This list is not exhaustive. Your therapist will help determine whether EMDR is appropriate for your circumstances.

What Happens During EMDR Therapy?

EMDR begins with an assessment, treatment planning, and preparation. Your therapist will explain the process, help you develop coping resources, and proceed at a pace intended to support emotional safety.

EMDR does not require every client to describe all aspects of a difficult experience in detail. Treatment experiences and outcomes vary, and no specific result can be guaranteed.

Is EMDR Right for You?

You may benefit from discussing EMDR if certain memories, triggers, emotions, or beliefs continue to interfere with your daily life. An initial conversation can help determine whether EMDR or another counseling approach may best fit your needs.
