Medicare Advantage Plans
Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Medicare Advantage is a private insurance alternative to Original Medicare that combines hospital, medical, and often prescription drug coverage into one plan. These plans usually have lower monthly premiums but require you to use a network of doctors and hospitals. Many also offer extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage. However, you may have copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket costs when you receive care.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Medigap works alongside Original Medicare to help cover costs like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. These plans have higher monthly premiums but provide greater predictability in out-of-pocket expenses. With Medigap, you can see any provider that accepts Medicare nationwide, without network restrictions. However, Medigap does not include prescription drug coverage, so you may need a separate Part D plan.
Key Differences
Medicare Advantage is ideal for those looking for lower premiums, all-in-one coverage, and extra benefits but are comfortable with provider networks and potential copays. Medigap is better for those who want broader provider access, lower out-of-pocket costs, and don’t need extra benefits but are willing to pay higher premiums.
